15,000 benefit from Outreach Programme

As the celebrations commence at the beginning of the joyous Eid celebrations in the Middle East, Kickworldwide and its sponsors also have good reason to celebrate.

Thanks to the support, both financial and practical from four of Oman’s most socially responsible companies, more than 15,000 children and teenagers have benefitted from the ‘Football For Future’ Outreach Programme in the country.

Nawras, ORPIC, Sohar Aluminium and Vale combined their efforts to ensure that the pioneering football initiative became a reality.
The programme, which focussed on the North Al Batinah area of Oman, aimed to use football to teach young children the importance of a healthy lifestyle whilst at the same time encouraging leadership among the older children in the community.

Despite some initial teething problems and some sensitive local issues that delayed the commencement, the programme which was commissioned by the Oman Football Association, was extremely well received in the schools.

By the time the schools closed in May, 13,800 children aged between 8 and 12 had participated in the Healthy Living Programme and 1260 teenagers aged between 13 and 16 had received the first level of the Kickworldwide Leadership course.

One lucky boy, Majid Al Shabli, even got to meet footballing hero Lionel Messi thanks to one of the sponsors, Nawras.
When the schools return in September, Kickworldwide will be looking to continue the programme and maybe extend its reach to other areas in Oman with Sur and Salalah both showing great interest.

Also, some of the successful Leadership candidates from Sohar will be given the opportunity to embark on some sports related courses at the Kickworldwide Institute within the Modern College of Business and Science in Muscat.

Former Leeds United footballer, Neil Ross, who managed the delivery of the project in Sohar was delighted by the numbers achieved. “With the support of the OFA and our local staff we have been able to take this fantastic project to a huge number of young people. There were challenges along the way but with the support of our sponsors, my colleagues at Kickworldwide and myself have seen first – hand, just what a difference football can make to the lives of young people”

The programme is also being supported by leading UK football club, Reading FC, whose Directors and Chief Executive have even participated in the healthy living presentations in Sohar schools.
